Badass Bonanza: Olympus Has Fallen, G.I. Joe: Retaliation 3D

Tonight, I watched Olympus Has Fallen and was able to screen G.I. Joe: Retaliation 3D. Both films were completely Badass.

Olympus Has Fallen surprised me. I really thought it was going to be a cheesy "Die Hard in the White House". It wasn't. It was an action movie that, had it been made in the 80's, would be spoken of with the same reverence as Commando and Predator. The only flaw I could find was the heavy use of CG, which I can forgive. If you like your action movies lean, mean, patriotic, and incredibly violent, this is the movie for you.

 

G.I. Joe: Retaliation 3D was violent, full of ninjas, and utterly ridiculous. In short, it was a near perfect G.I. Joe film. The biggest problem Retaliation has is that it feels like the third or fourth movie in a franchise when it isn't. For example, the "Nanomite Wars" are mentioned, yet the events of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra hardly qualify as one war, let alone multiple ones. In addition, there is no mention of how Storm Shadow survives his battle with Snake Eyes from the first film. But apparently he did, and it is common knowledge. I watched the 3D version of the movie, and I'm glad I did for one reason: the mountainside ninja battle. It is one of the single best uses of 3D thus far, which is quite an achievement when you consider that Retaliation is a 2D conversion.

• Gareth Evans, Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and producer Ario Sagantoro are ALL coming back for The Raid 2: Berandal which will begin shooting in mid January 2013.

• The filmmakers are bringing in even more talented actors, including Tio Pakusadewo, Oka Antara, Alex Abbad, Arifin Putra, Julie Estelle, Marsha Timothy, Epi Kusnandar, Zack Lee, Roy Marten, Mathias Muchus and martial arts maestros Feri Tri Yulisman and “Silat Master” Cecep Arif Rahman.

• Julie Estelle is going to play ‘The Hammer Girl’. “What we are doing with [Julie’s] character is actually another form of harimau silat. Basically, in this style, you hit with a flat palm while the fingers are poised, then you can strike, grab, pull and drag. So we decided to transform it to weapon-based. Her character has two hammers, she will hit with the hard part, stab you with the claw and pull you back, so technically it’s harimau but a weapon version of it."

• Filming starts shooting on January 19th. 

• The first scene takes place two hours after the first film ends, will be two hours or more, and the last 40 to 45 minutes will consist of "major action".

Badass Bonanza: The Hobbit, Pacific Rim, Killing Them Softly

It is 5:13 am, and I just got home after a fifteen hour day at work. Granted, five and a half of those hours were spent watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Killing Them Softly, but it was still a long day.

Was Killing Them Softly Badass? No, it was not. In fact, I'm not even sure what the point of it was. I understand that the message is supposed to be that there is no difference between criminal activity and our national politics, but it just doesn't work. The movie is simply boring.

Was The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Badass? Parts of it were. I am by no means a Tolkien purist, but there was a good 45 minutes of the film that served only to pad the running time/trilogy length. I watched it in "standard" digital 3D and thought the movie looked amazing, so I'm not sure if watching it in a higher frame rate is necessary. I really enjoyed it, but I'm going to reserve judgement on The Hobbit until I see all three parts of the trilogy.
